Purging to cleanse: a qualitative study of ayahuasca healing at a drug treatment center in Peru

Abstract

Through interviews with 11 healers, plant preparers, and psychotherapists at Peru's Takiwasi Center, identifies three explanatory frameworks — spiritual, Amazonian traditional, and clinical — used to interpret the therapeutic role of purging in ayahuasca-assisted addiction treatment.
