Abstract

Overview of risks and toxic effects of ayahuasca in humans. Acute administration and long-term consumption do not appear seriously toxic. Limited nonhuman developmental studies suggest possible toxic effects. Data on adolescents exposed in religious contexts are reassuring but more research is needed on pregnant women.
