Frecska E, Bokor P, Winkelman M

Frontiers in Pharmacology (2016)

Narrative review
Abstract

Proposes that ayahuasca's therapeutic effects are best understood through a bio-psycho-socio-spiritual model. At the biological level, DMT's sigma-1 receptor agonism may counteract chronic low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress underlying diseases of civilization. Integrates pharmacological, psychological, and spiritual dimensions.
