Cross-sectional survey
Abstract

Reanalysis of Global Ayahuasca Survey data (N=10,836) examining adverse post-ayahuasca mental states as potential mediators of mental health outcomes. Using machine learning and structural equation modeling, found that states traditionally considered adverse (e.g. emotional distress, visual disturbances) can contribute to improved mental health, especially in individuals with prior anxiety or depression. Non-traditional settings and psychiatric history were associated with greater adverse state reporting. Emphasizes the importance of supportive ceremonial context.
