Risk assessment of ayahuasca use in a religious context: self-reported risk factors and adverse effects

Abstract

Safety evaluation of ritual ayahuasca use among 614 users from a religious institution. Most frequent adverse effects were transient gastrointestinal symptoms. Psychiatric medication use was not associated with increased adverse effects. Institutional safety practices appear sufficient to prevent severe reactions.
