Altered states and the study of consciousness: The case of ayahuasca
Journal of Mind and Behavior (2003)
Theoretical/hypothesis
Abstract
Discusses ayahuasca-induced altered states as data for a theory of consciousness. Proposes consciousness as a cognitive system defined by parameters whose values can be modified by ayahuasca. Following William James and Aldous Huxley, argues that any general theory of consciousness must incorporate non-ordinary states alongside ordinary experience.
